Following the poor performance of
the Nigerian athletes to the London 201 Olympic Games, the National
Academy Sports Comission, NASCOM, has resolved to focus on few selected
sports at the school sports level to regenerate the standard of sports
in the country.
Chairman of NASCOM, Adeyemi Idowu, who made this statement while speaking with sports journalists, said the need to invest in school sports was as a result of President Goodluck Jonathan decision to improve and add value to Nigerian sports as the President has mandated the National Sports Commission,NSC, to come up with a proposal on how best to improve sports.
"Having reviewed the performance of the Nigerian athletes to the London 2012 Olympic Games, the President had mandated the Ministry of Sports to come up with a proposal on how best to improve sports"."NASCOM is dealing with children who are in school and out of school"
Idowu, said the Commission had embarked on a reversible revolution for sports at the school sports level with a special focus on the children who are the bedrock of sports development, adding that the few selected sports are less expensive and it would be easier for any school to organise any of the sport because it does not require any expensive sports facilities.
According to him, Athletics, Combat Sports,(Taekwondo, Karate, Judo) Ball Games ( Volleyball, Basketball, Racquet Sport(Table Tennis, tennis, Squash) Football,, Calisthenics(Dance, Gymnastic) are the six selected sports NASCOM has adopted, stressing that the Commission would meet with States Governors to accept their programm as they would also need their support of States Ministry of Education make the programm a reality by inculcating it in their schools curriculum.
"Our plan is that without costing too much money you can now go to any state and get yourself involve in Rythym and Play as Inter- House Sports is the common denominator of NASCOM".
"NASCOM will encourage each school to organise Inter- house sports, Rythym and Play and support schools to organise inter- school sports"
He said the Commission had resolved to re- brand Nigeria's sporting system at the school level with the introduction of Rythym and Play which would take the place of Physical Education with the support of the States Ministry of Education, adding that NASCOM would encourage each school to organise Inter- House Sports, Rythym and Play and support schools to stage Inter- School sports.
He assured that athletes discovered at the Rythym and Play would hav ethe opportunity to join sports clubs where they would be exposed to the nitty gritty of sports
