The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, NBB of C, has identified lack of corporate sponsors as the bane of professional boxing in Nigeria.
Its President, Godwin Kanu, made this statement in Lagos while speaking with sports journalists at a day seminar on Professional Boxing In Nigeria held at the SWAN Secretariat, inside National Stadium, Surulere.
Kanu, said the inability of attract corporate bodies and public spirited individuals to support the board's quest to organise regular boxing championships has affected the growth of professional boxing as most of the pugilists are in the mood to fight.
According to him, Nigerian boxers are well endowed with boxing prowess but lack of regular tournaments and media support have created vacuum in the sport as he NBB of C has resolved to revive all the board's area councils in the federation.
Kanu, said the seminar was part of the board's determination to instill discipline in the boxers as the board has made it necessary for the boxers to have a manager who would help the boxers to design an effective training programmes couple with regular tournamnets in an effort to improve the standard of professional boxing in Nigeria.
He said the board was delighted to regulate the issue of Manager\Boxer relationship as a boxer is expected to have a licensed manager as its being practised world wide, adding that a professional boxer must endeavor to have a contract with a manager who is endorsed by the board.
The board's Vice President, Sir Walter Batowei, presented a paper on Rules and Regulations Governing Professional Boxing in Nigeria as Doctor Anthony presented a paper on Psychology inprofessional boxing while Coach Joe Mensah presented a papper on Relationship of Mnagers, Trainers and Boxers in THier Various Camps just as Effiong Nyon of Radio Continental presented a paper on Essence of Media\ Marketing in Professional Boxing.
