
The 2010 Lagos State Sports Festival tagged “Ibile 2010 Games” enter its crucial stage at the weekend with several events nearing their final stages.
The Sports Festival which is being organized by the Lagos State Sports Council had the preliminaries in team events such as basketball and football being concluded while individual events such as Judo, Taekwondo and Boxing are at the medal stages.
The festival which will come to a close this Friday is expected to put the state athletes in competitive mood ahead the zonal elimination of the 17th National Sports Festival coming up soon in Ogun State .
The State's Sports Council Chairman, Agboola Dabiri, confirmed that the Ibile 2010 sports month is tailored towards the discovery and development of budding talents in the state.
Dabiri maintained that talents discovered would be trained to represent the state at the national Sports Festival in Rivers State later in the year.
The Sports Council chairman gave assurance that the Sports Council is poised to organize a hitch-free festival which attracted more than 25,000 athletes from the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas of the state.
It would be recalled that the state government successfully hosted three editions of the festival in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Meanwhile, Nigeria national Boxing coach, Obisia Nwankpa has given a pass mark to the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Sports Council at the weekend during the Boxing event of the IBILE 2010 Lagos State Sports Festival for a job well-done.
Coach Nwankpa, one of Nigeria foremost boxing coach told our correspondent that he is impressed with the number of raw talents on display by the various Local Governments participating in the Lagos Sports Month.
According to the former Commonwealth Boxing Champion, Lagos State is definitely living up to the billing as the hub of talent discovery in Nigeria .
The National Coach who was on hand as a Special Guest, watched the young boxers thrilled the large crowd that gathered at the sports hall of the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park to catch a glimpse of the boxers’ performance at the weekend.
He said the Sports Council should endeavor to organise competitions regularly to access the boxers levels of maturity in the game among other means of encouragement.
Still on the Lagos State Sports Festival tagged Ibile 2010.
Ikosi Isheri is topping the Medals Table of the Lagos State Sports Festival tagged Ibile 2010.
Ikosi Isheri Local Council Development Areas have 18 Gold 14 Silver and 14 Bronze medals to make a total of 46 medals as at Saturday.
Ibeju Lekki Local Govermnment Area is second with 14 Gold, 8 Silver and 13 Bronze medals to make a total of 35 medals as Ejigbo LCDA is third with 8 Gold, 5 silver and 6 Bronze medals.
Yaba LCDA is fourth on the medals table with 6 Gold, 5 Silver and 3 Bronze medals just as Otto Awori is fifth with 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 7 Bronze medals to make a total of 15 medals.
