Former Nigerian Internationals,
Samson Siasia and Waheed Akanni, have commended the efforts of Ayodeji
Joseph, the chairman of Apapa Local Government for providing a brand new
Toyota Bus for the Apapa Golden Stars Football Club in a bid to further
motivate the team to excel in both national and international
competitions.
Former Super Eagles coach, who was
elated over the gesture, said the support of the Apapa Local Government
towards the development of football in Lagos State has shown that grassroot football is the survival and future of Nigerian
football because the move would aid the young football players to be focused
and concentrate on how to achieve success in their chosen profession.
While urging other local government
chairmen in
Nigeria to emulate Ayodeji Joseph in redeeming the image of grassroot
football, Siasia, said it was a noble idea for the council to organise
regular football competitions because the event would not only help to
reduce the rate of criminal activities among the youth but also aid the
discovery of young talented football players who might be invited to the
national camp.
To Wahid Akanni, the move is a kind
of motivation for the young football players whom he believes could be
Nigeria's future stars with proper training programme that is fortified
with modern techniques, adding that Nigeria is blessed with talented
football players but they are not exposed to modern techniques of
soccer.
The Chairman of Lagos State Football
Association, Seyi Akinwunmi, said the Local Government was a partner in
progress especially in the area of organising football competition and
providing necessary tools for the
growth of football in Lagos State.
