It was a carnival like atmosphere on Sunday evening, when the national team; Super Eagles landed at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar, for next Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Namibia, which will hold at the UJ Esuene Stadium in the Canaan City.
The traditional troupe, churned out music akin to that of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, complete with their green white green colors and escorted the team and its officials all the way to the hotel.
Speaking on the ground breaking reception, Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, said its been long that he saw such amazing welcome for the national team, especially at a time that the team is at rebuilding stage, adding that he thanked Governor Liyel Imoke, the Nigeria Federation Federation and the good people of Cross River State as he assured them that the Eagles would make them proud hosts of the national team.
Diminutive winger, Ejike Uzoenyi, said the welcome team had given the team enough motivation for victory while South African based defence ace, Gege Soriola, said he felt a sense of duty to repay Cross River state and Nigerians with a decent outing on Sunday,3rd of June, 2012.
At the
head of the Cross River State Welcome Party, was the Commissioner for
Sports, Hon Patrick Ugbe, State Security Adviser, Rekpene Bassey, NFF
Technical Director, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme was also among other top
dignitaries who were detailed by Governor Liyel Imoke to give the Eagles
a rousing welcome reception from the airport all the way to their camp
site at the Metropolitan Hotel in the heart of the city.
