Nigeria and UEFA Champions League Winner, Mikel Obi, has attributed the inability of Super Eagles to qualify for the 2012 African Nations Cup to misinformation.
Obi, said the Eagles were in the right frame of mind to secure a win against the Guinean national side in their last match in the African Nations Cup qualifier at the National Stadium, Abuja but they were charged to play an attacking football football in a bid to score goals.
"We created a lot of chance in 2012 African Nations Cup qualifier against Guinea at Abuja. But towards the end of the match there was misinformation from the bench that the Eagles need more goals when they were 2 - 1 up"
"And as the player, we thought we are through with 2 - 1 but we were told that we need more goals. So we left everyone behind and we went for attack. They counter attack to equalise. After the game, we were being told that 2 -1 was all we need to scale through"
He explained that the Eagles were never informed that two goals to One was enough to qualify Nigeria for the African Nations Cup but they were being confused when they were told that 2 - 1 lead was what the team needed to book a ticket for the continental soccer fiesta.
According to him, the Guineans took advantage of their attacking style of football to equalize which nailed the aspirations of the Eagles in the continental soccer , adding that the Eagles would had featured in the cometition if they consolidated with the 2 - 1 lead.
On the UEFA Champions League, an elated Obi, said he was happy to be the third Nigerian football player who had won the tourney after the duo of Kanu Nwankwo and Finidi George.
