The championship which kicked started on Monday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium has shown that the state and Nigeria have abundant athletes who could make Nigeria proud at any organised international competitions if they are well nurtured to stardom.
The championship which centred on field and track events is another structured sports programmeof the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development where untapped athletes would be discovered ahead of the 19th edition of the National Sports Festival in Calabar, Cross River in 2014 as the event will also serve as an exposure to the National School Sports Festival.
While Speaking with Usoro Rose, a pupil of National College, Gbagada, who clinched the second position with a time of 5.20 metres at the girl's long jump event due to injury she sustained, commended the state's government for deeming it necessary to delve into athletics and not football which has grabbed the attention of the government at all levels.
Rose, whose intention is to participate at the 2016 Olympic Games, said the championship would avail the state government the opportunity to discover athletes and also train them to become world class athletes in the class of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt among others.
She appealed to the government to make available sports facilities at each of the educational district so as to further enhance the growth of at the school level.
To Obi Jude, of Isheri Senior Grammar School, the championship has shown that the state's government should invest in school sports to discover athlete at the grassroot level, adding that the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development should endeavor to deploy its coaches to the schools to tutor them on the basic of the sporta and also to make provision for facilities.
The competition continue on Tuesday at the Agege Stadium.
