Victory is so sweet and the Golden Eaglets are savouring their latest feat after a 6--1 win over Black Starlets of Ghana on Sunday at Stade de Marrakech in the 10th Orange CAN Under-17.
Star striker, Isaac Success lived up to the bill by grabbing four goals in the 10th, 29th,60th and 68th minute while Bernard Bulbwa and Kelechi Iheanacho scored the other goals in the 29th and 94th
minute.
The victory gave Nigeria the first win of Group B after Congo and Cote d'Ivoire had earlier played a pulsating draw.
" We enjoyed this victory against Ghana because they a good side and we are traditional opponents," Coach Manu Garba (MFR) said at the post match conference." It is a good start for us but we remain focussed because we have not won anything yet.
“This is not the first time Nigeria is winning by a big margin at this level, when we won the tournament in Togo in 2007, we beat Eritrea 8-0 but this is the first time we are beating Ghana this way.
“We are happy and we are looking forward to a good tournament and by the grace of God, we shall qualify for the World Cup as African Champions,”he noted.
The Golden Eaglets played a purposeful game after a tentative start from the two West African rivals. But it wasn't long before the Nigerian lads turned on the heat as they riled pressure on their
opponents.
Success got the curtain raiser when he collected a pocket pass from Musa Yahaya which he cleverly slotted to the left side of goalkeeper Ati Lawrence. The second and third goal was typical of
Golden Eaglets with Bulbwa and Success feeding off from pocket passes
to end the first half 3-0.
Success added the fourth goal with a penalty kick after Lawrence fouled Bulbwa in the box. He added the fifth goal in the 68th minute while second half substitute Kelechi Iheanacho scored the last goal in the 94th minute.
Ghana’s consolatory goal was scored by Yeboah Yaw who shot from 30 yard to beat a flat footed goalkeeper Adeyinka Adewale.
Success that was given the match ball following his hat trick in the meantime, has dedicated his goals to his mother and Golden Eaglets’ teammate, Friday Njengo who is hospitalised at the National Hospital Abuja following injury in an auto-crash in February.
Njengo who had been in coma for weeks was recently transferred from the hospital's Intensive Care Unit to the general ward as he recuperates.
"Our thought and prayers always with Njengo who would have been here with us if not for the accident he had, “said Success.” We missed him so much.
"I'm dedicating this victory and two of my goals to him and the two others to my mother.
"We pray that God grant him good health soonest,"he added.
