Chairman of Lagos State Table Tennis Association, Architect Femi Sokoya,
has vowed to continue sponsoring and creating an enabling environment
for regular competitions for the state's table tennis players to excel.
While
speaking with sports journalists, Sokoya noted that the association's
players won the five gold medals at stake at the last National Sports
Festival tagged Eko 2012 Games because the players were exposed to both
local and international competitions and the association would not
relent in its efforts to sustain the feat ahead of future competitions.
He
said the association had begun intensive training ahead of the next
National Sports Festival in Cross River State which is opened to
Nigeria's elite athletes, stressing that the participation of the elite
athletes would not distrupt the association's focus in
building athletes who would challenge and defeat the elite ping
pongers.
Sokoya, who noted the chairman's Rumble International
table tennis competition was to honor the commissioner for sports,
Waheed Enitan Oshodi, who is now the President of Nigeria Table Tennis
Federation, adding that the competition is geared at exposing newly
discovered athletes to a competitive championship.
According to
him, the association has concluded plans to organise age-grade
competitions to build their confidence since they are the future of
Nigerian sports, adding that the association would soon begin aggressive
grassroot developmental program to popularize the sport.
