Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, says the Lagos State boxers should not be carried away by the euphoria of winning a boxing competition in London, England but continue to work hard in a bid to sustain the feat and prove to be a worthy champion.

The Governor, who made this statement on Thursday while addressing the boxers at the fifth edition of Governor's Belt Edition of Monthly Saturday Boxing Show, said whatever successes they might have recorded means nothing if they fail to be relevant in the sport, adding that they must continue to work hard to improve their status as a strong pugilist whose aspirations is to become a world champion.

"Yes you have done well, you have gone abroad to win for the first time after three or four attempt. But it now a signal to you that you can overcome a club in London, so too your neighbours whom you have defeated previously are telling you that they are behind your back".

Sports talents will not lat forever, so it will require a lot of discipline from you.Yesterday, is no longer important, everything you had won yesterday means nothing if you cannot keep it till today. So the work that you did yesterday, is only perhaps half of the work you must do today to stay ahead of tomorrow." the Governor said.

Fashola, said the invitation of Ogun State boxers in this year's edition was to give the Lagos State pugilists a good challenge despite winning a competition in London, adding that they must strive to stay above their contemporaries as other states want to overcome them i  national competitions.

"Every year is see some thing new and this year is no exception. "We have more sponsors and the participation is better and it is no longer a Lagos State affairs.Ogun State who have gone to join us and they have put up good challenge"

While commending Wale Edun the chairman of Lagos State Boxing Hall of Fame, Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association and the sponsors for an inspiring efforts towards regenerating boxing, the Governor, said the eat recorded by Aishat Oriyomi, showed that the state's male pugilists should not take anything for granted.

"I thanked Wale Edun and the sponsors for what have been a truly inspiring efforts.I  also thanked the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social development, members of the state's  sporting family fr staging a wonderful boxing show and a busy calendar." From a humble beginning, five years ago, people are taking notice of what we do here with Amateur boxing."

He called on Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association,LSABA, to organise seminar for the boxers, media practitioners and stakeholders on the current rules and regulations of boxing as he believes that the gesture would enable the boxers to know that it is not about killer punches but actual scoring points.
