The sponsor, Toyin Okenla- Ojeaga,said the competition which started last year in Lagos State with ping pongers draw across the state, was elevated to pave the way for other table tennis players in the country to showcase their talents in order to widen the scope of the competition.
Okenla- Ojeaga, who was delighted to sponsor the competition, said the event was a way of developing the sport at the grassroot level, stressing that sports and education are fundamental to development and it fortifies people to achieve their desired goals in life.
The former national table tennis player, who sees her quest to sponsor the event as a way to give back to the society and to help the young ones to fulfill their dreams, said grassroot sports development was essential for the youths in order to have a bright and rewarding future, adding that the tournament which would have positive impact on the youths participating in the event, would also help to nurture them to stardom.
President, Nigeria Table Tennis Federation,NTTF, Wahid Enitan Oshodi,said the tournament was the beginning of the journey to redeem the nation's image among the comity of Commonwealth Games through the athletes discovered at the event, adding that the tournament would help to discover new batch of players who would form the Federation's nucleus of future ping pongers.
While thanking, the sponsor, Oshodi, explained that the NTTF would continue to encourage old but strong table tennis players, Segun Toriola and Funke Oshinaike among others to train Nigerian talented young table tennis players.
Seven events in the Singles and Doubles events will be decided as each state is expected to parade two table tennis players and a coach each at the championship.
