Sixteen teams across the country are in Lagos, as the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) pilot league kicks off on Friday at the new look knock-up hall of the National Stadium.
With the last team perfecting its registration on Thursday, the pilot is meant to test run facilities ahead of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF)-sanctioned Lagos World Tour in June.
According to NTTF President, Wahid Oshodi, the league would help to assess the local players as well as help some of the players to tune up for the World Championship in Japan next month.
“We are hoping that with this pilot league, our players can be assessed especially the local ones. Also, the league will give every player across the country the opportunity to showcase their talents for the coaches to identify them.
For us, we want to have pool of players that can replace some of the ageing ones. Talents abound in the game but we need to identify them and nurture them to become champions,” he said.
The NTTF helmsman added: “The league is also an avenue to for us to keep our players in good shape for major competition especially as we are hosting the ITTF Lagos World Tour in June, it became necessary for us to test our facilities as the world’s best are expected in Lagos during the Lagos World Tour. We are hoping that more players will come through as the main league is scheduled to take off in October.”
The federation as well as well-meaning individuals is sponsoring the one-week championship.
