Two-time Olympic medalist, Enefiok Udobong, has advised the National Sports Commission,NSC, to engage Nigerian athletes in a comprehensive training programmes ahead of the twenty-twentyTokyo Olympic Games.
The Olympian, made this statement while speaking with our sports editor, Adeyika Adebayo, at the fourth Redeemer's Annual Sports Summit which took place at the Youth Centre of Redeemed Christain Church of God, Mowe.
Udobong, said the National Sports Commission,NSC, through the sports federations should have different layers of developmental programme on short- mid and long term training programmes to produce athletes who could win laurels at the Games.
While noting that five is good enough to produce worthy olympic champions at the twenty- twenty Tokyo Olympic Games, the athlete, said Nigerian athletes needed a psychologist, an olympian, who would motivate and mentor the athletes to continue working hard with the zeal of emerging champions in their respective chosen sports.
Udobong, who won a gold medal in the four by four hundred metres relay at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and a bronze medal in the same event at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, said Innocent Egbuneke spurred him to win a laurel at the Sydney Olympic Games in , Australia, adding that he psyche Team Nigeria to claim a bronze medal.
He said the NSC should endeavor to beam its serch light on domestic Nigeria's athletes than looking outside the shore of the country for heroes and heroines, adding that the commission must charged the sports federation to organise a minimum of two competitions in a month.
