Over one hundred and fifty pupils from fifty Primary and Secondary Schools in Lagos State are participating in A - Three - Week Volleyball League at the Volleyball Courts of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
The programme, which is tagged Junior Volleyball Developmental Programme, Lagos, Nigeria, is an initiative of former chief coach of Lagos State Volleyball Association, Suraj Olajide Onatuga.
The programme is being supported by a United States based volleyball coach, Ibrahim Subair and Lagos State Sports Commission, LSSC.
While speaking with sports journalists, Onatuga, said kits worth of seven million naira was made available by one of the players whom he nurtured to stardom, Ibrahim Subair, with the help of Samaritan's Feet, A Non- Governmental Organisation, based in the Unite States of America would be distributed to the pupils shortlisted for the programme.
The coach, who started playing volleyball in Nineteen Seventy- Two, said over sixty pupils had been given quality volleyball kits in the first phase of the programme while another set of pupils would also benefit from the exercise which would end in the next two weeks.
He explained that his passion for the game of vollyeball which had helped him to produce world class volleyball players, spurred him to delve into volleyball developmental porgramme as he believed that the programme would elevate the status of Nigeria among the Volleyball playing nations in Africa.
Onatuga, said the concept of building Nigeria's future volleyball stars which started in Twenty- Thirteen, blossomed with the support of one the players whom he nurtured to stardom, Ibrahim Subair, who through Samaritan's Feet, A Non- Governmental Organisation, based in the United States of America.
Onatuga, who was in the United States of America for a couple of years through the assistance of Subair, said his stay in the United States of America further motivated him to delve into the programme since he was exposed to modern tchniques of teaching the game.
The veteran Volleyball player, explained that the participating pupils whose ages ranges from seven to sixteen, would converge on their training centers immediately after the exercise, adding that the kits would motivate many youths to join the programme.
While thanking the management team of Lagos State Sports Commission,LSSC, for creating an enabling environment for the suucess of this year's edition, said the commission's support had drastically lessen the burden attached to the programme.
