The State's Deputy Governor, Tene Ikuru,told team of sports journalists that the state decided to delve into providing adequate security in order to erase an impression that the state is volatile and that there are series of criminal activities being perpetuated in Rivers State.
The Deputy Governor, said a total of seventeen thousand police as well as a combine team of Joint Task Force had been deployed to nooks and crannies of the state to maintain peace and sustain the security programmes which Governor Rotimi Amechi had put in place since inception of his administration.
Ikuru, said the Games which would officially start on Sunday at the Liberation Stadium would be declared opened by President Goodluck Jonathan as he assured that the state's government had made provision to convey athletes,officials and interested members of the public to the event which he described would be the best ever organised in the history of National Sports Festival.
According to him, the Liberation Stadium would seat 16,000 spectators would witness heavy presence of security personnels to forestall criminal activities, adding that all the games scheduled for Sunday would end early in the morning in order to encourage many people to witness the opening ceremony.
He assured that each state Director of Sports would be provided with a car to easy transportation problems as he urged the Director of Sports to warn their athletes to be law abiding during their stay in Rivers State as he said that any athletes who fail to comply with the directive would incurr the wrath of the state's government.
As part of measures to make the Director of Sports feel the sense of belonging, the Rivers State Government has promised to provide them with telecommunication gadgets.
