Lagos State Commissioner for Sports, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, has said that the Adopt - A- Talent Sports Programme is the future of sports in the state.
The Sports Commissioner, who made this statement while speaking with sportsweight.blogspot.com, said most of the athletes who had been selected under the programme would represent Lagos State at the Calabar 2014 National Sports Festival.
The former Chairman of the State table tennis association, said the programme was one of their flagship in sports as he assured that the state government would give enough exposure in order to bring them to international standard.
"Lagos State will ensure that the athletes welfare, education will be supported by the state as he believed that they want the athletes to excel, hence the reason for the programme"
He urged the athletes to emulate Nigeria's World Boxing Council, Segun Ajose, who according to him his the pride of Africa, adding that the athletes must adhere to their coaches training programmes to become future stars.
Initiator of the programme, Prince Wale Oladunjoye, said Adopt - A- Talent Sports Programme was designed to develop athletes into wholesome personalty to become an elite athletes within a short time, stressing that the state have been benefitting from the programme as some of the dixcovered athletes featured at the Rivers State Garden City Games and the National School Sports Festival.
Oladunjoye, said they would soon entered into a contractual agreement with athletes and their parents as he stressed that the gesture would serve as a reference point in attracting many home based athletes to exhibit their talents, thus boosting the imae of the Adopt - A - Talent Sports Programme.
"Already Lagos State is reaping the benefit of the programme as some of the selected athletes represented Lagos State at the last held National Sports Festival tagged Garden City Games and the National School Sports Festival in Calabar"
"One hundred and five athletes have been selected on merit.The programme is a Public Private Partnership(PPP), thus it would outlive Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola administration".
The programme will officially be launched by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola on Tuesday, 7 February at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
