Former Sports Minister, retired Colonel Musa Mohammed and high-riding Nigerian born England based coach in Brentford, Azeez Akinbolu, have been speaking on the controversy over the invitation of the so called ‘Big Boys’, to the national team ahead of the South Africa 2013 Nations Cup qualifying game against Liberia in September.
Mohammed, who spoke in a telephone conversation with Eagles Media Officer Ben Alaiya, said the qualifier had reached a bend where Keshi has to use only the best players that the country can boast of, stressing that having missed the last African Nations Cup, there should be no room for sentiments or pressure on Keshi, as merit should be the watchword.
“We know Keshi’s antecedents and we know he can take us to the promised land but I will advise him to listen to all opinions but use only the best players that will be available to him. Since we missed the last Nations Cup, there should be no room for sentiments or pressure on Keshi, merit should be the watchword at this time”, the fiery former minister said.
On his part, Akinbolu, who worked with Chief Adegboyega Onigbinde, in the run-up to the Korea-Japan 2002 World Cup, said Keshi should be trusted to deliver on his promise after his revolutionary move of blooding foreign based stars and those who play in the Nigerian Premier League now rated Africa’s best by the an organ of FIFA recently.
While praising Keshi for his rebuilding process in the national team, he called on Nigerian coaches never to abandon opportunities to update their knowledge of the game, even as he again said he thinks himself ready for an assignment with one of the junior national teams of Nigeria.
“With my experience at both senior and grassroots level, I think I’m well placed to help the future of Nigerian football be ensuring that players of the right ages are groomed for the age grade sides and eventually blossom into the national team”, he said through Utmostt. Com boss Olusegun Jegede.
