The Golden Eaglets
made it two wins in
as many matches on Friday with a 6-2 defeat of boastful Christa Academy
at the
St. Patrick College in Ikot Ansa within the Calabar metropolitan area of
Cross
River state.
No quarter was asked
for and none was
given following pre-match bragging by the proprietor of the Christa
Academy,
Mrs. Chris Ubi Isobo that her wards would end the National Under-17
team’s
winning streak.
The game might not be
too pretty to
watch with pockets of water on the field due to rains but the Golden
Eaglets
left no one in doubt about their superiority from the blast of the
referee’s
whistle.
Their first goal came barely five minutes into the game that
started
7:45 am when Umar Ahmed (Alves) delivered an inch-perfect passes for
sturdy
Isaac Success -who incidentally earned the free kick on the edge of the
box- to
slot home for the curtain raiser. Some twenty minutes after, the Golden
Eaglets
added two more goals through Kelechi Iheanacho and Success yet again.
Christa Academy came
back powerfully and
twice capitalised on defensive lapses to score two goals in quick
successions. Eaglets’ Goalkeeper Emeka
Nwabulu had guilelessly passed the ball across the face of his goal line
only
for a loitering Christa’s player to slap the ball into the net. Christa’s second and last goal of the game
was via penalty taken by Joseph Oti.
This jolted the Golden
Eaglets and they
were back in the hunt with ceaseless raids which soon paid off.
Spot-kick
specialist, Ifeanyi Matthew converted one into a goal after Iheanacho
was
brought down in the box to end the first half 4-2 in favour of the
Nigeria’s
budding team.
Two more goals were
scored by Iheanacho
and Oluwaseun Jegede in the second half, this practically douse the fire
in the
belly of Mrs. Isobo on the bench of Christa Academy.
“It was a good game but
the rains did
not help my players,” she said afterwards. “We thank the coaching crew
for
giving us the opportunity and we wish the team all the best in their
quest to
qualify for the African Youth Championship as well as the FIFA Under-17
World
Cup next year.”
Meanwhile, the Golden
Eaglets would be
observing tomorrow as rest day after two weeks of rigorous training
schedule.
The team would resume training on Monday with some test matches already
lined
up.
