The Nigeria Basketball Federation has decided to allow interested states and basketball clubs to participate in the National Division One basketball Championship slated for Ilorin , Kwara State from March 26 through April 4.
The move according to NBBF was in a bid to pave the way for more basketball clubs to feature in the tournament and also to improve the standard of the sport.
The Secretary General of the NBBF, Francis Gbiri, said the need to open the tournament to states or clubs that are not originally on the Division-One roster to bid for a slot was informed by the non-existence of some of the listed states or clubs while some are already in the premier league.
Gbiri, pointed out that it would be wrong of the federation to head for Ilorin believing that all the ten listed teams would be on ground for the championship.
He said the Federation discovered that some of the accreditted states or clubs for the event are no longer existing while some that are still existing are now in the premier league.
Thus, the Federation needs to allow some other states and clubs that have recorded excellent performance in the game but are not in Division-One to bid to take part, stressing that the federation did similar thing when it want to balance the Atlantic and Savannah conference of the premier league.
A team each from Atlantic and Savannah Conference will be promoted to the premier league at the end while two teams will go down from the premier league.
