Players of Ayo Olopon, Draughts and Cards were delight to watch on Saturday at the Agunbiade Primary School, Somolu, Lagos during the maiden edition of Lad Sports Club Traditional Sports Championship organised in conjunction with the Office of the Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola in Somolu area of Lagos State.
The tournament relieved the memory of the good old days as players, fans and guests drinking palm wine with calabashes. The competition was put together to keep people, both young and old, busy with participation in recreational activities in their localities.
Tunde Ajayi from Ward D came first in Ayo Olopon. Taiwo Johnson of Ward A was second, while Yaya Oladipo and Ebunola Akinola came third and fourth respectively.
In Draughts, Otuku Doubra of Ward C came first, while Dada Abiodun (Ward C) and Anthony Olakunle (Ward H) came second and third respectively. Talabi Olanrewaju won the fourth position.
In Cards event, Ladipo Bada of Ward H came first. Igho Anthony of Ward F was second, while Taofeek Agoro and Saheed Dodo came third and fourth respectively.
Blackberry won the Ram Charging contest. The ram defeated Head Boy and Action to second and third position respectively.
A total of N105, 000 was given out as prize money for winners in the three events. Overall winners got the sum of N15, 000 each, runners-up went home with the sum of N10, 000, while third and fourth place winners were given N5, 000 each.
Prince ‘Wale Oladunjoye, Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to the Governor, who was a Special Guest of Honour, praised the performance of the players. He revealed that Governor Fashola has given directive that all the L9ocla governments and Local Government Development Areas in the state would have a taste of the development going on in the traditional sports Lagos .
Chairman of Lagos State Traditional Sports Association, Bash Agusto commended Governor Fashola’s effort to bring back the fame of indigenous sports in the state, while the Chairman of Lad Sports Club; Mr. Oladipo Osunnubi called on the private organizations to partner the state government to develop traditional sports in Lagos .
