Fans of Rugby football in Lagos State will be thrilled with an exciting Lagos 7s Rugby Football tournament billed for this weekend at the playground of National Institute of Sports, inside the National Stadium, complex, Surulere.
The event comes with a different package as one lucky rugby fan could be driving home a new Toyota Avanza 1.3 from Mandilas Toyota valued at over 3 million naira at the Lagos 7s Rugby Festival taking place at the main arena of the National Stadium in Surulere next weekend.
The idea for the exciting competition was initiated by Stephen Gladwin, the General Manager of the motors division of Mandilas Enterprises, Nigeria’s biggest Toyota dealership, when he saw a similar competition whilst attending a rugby match in South Africa.
“I was at a match in South Africa when I first saw fans trying to win a car by hitting the cross bar of the rugby posts with a drop kick.
Mandilas has a long and proud history as a company that likes to innovate and add value and excitement to the lives of Nigerians so we thought it would be a great way to help raise the profile of rugby with this fun competition,” said Mr Gladwin.
A drop kick is a kick where the rugby ball has to be dropped from the hand and allowed to bounce on the ground before being kicked.
It is a kick that is worth 3 points in a match when taken during open play and the ball passes through the up-rights and over the cross bar. Fans wanting to enter the competition to win the Toyota Avanza will have to buy a Lagos 7s shirt as their entry to the competition.
In sevens rugby a drop kick replaces a “place kick” as a conversion worth 2 points after a try has been scored.
Jide Afolabi, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Rugby Football Federation, praised Mandilas for their enthusiasm and support of Nigerian rugby.
“Despite being the second biggest ball sport on the planet rugby has been overshadowed by other ball sports in Nigeria and we have struggled to find corporate sponsors to help fund development of the game.
This show of confidence in sevens rugby by such an influential player in the Nigerian economy is truly welcome. I can’t wait to see the guys taking their shot at winning the Avanza. It should be very entertaining too for the fans and spectators.
Mandilas has 10 Toyota dealerships across the country and has spear headed the development of the motor industry in Nigeria being the company that established and popularised VWs across the country before building the Volkswagen of Nigeria manufacturing plant and playing a vital role in the industrialization of the country.
Mandilas has been a Toyota dealer since 2002 and prides itself on service and support.
The Lagos 7s is open to the public who will be allowed free entry to the National Stadium for both days of the rugby festival which will feature the top twelve teams from across the country.
Play begins at 10.00 am and continues to 6 pm on both days. With fast paced action on the pitch, music, food and drink the Lagos 7s Rugby Festival, which is sponsored by EXP, will be two days or fun and entertainment for the whole family.
