The tournament will see Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Madagascar, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, Namibia as well as two Kenyan teams contesting a top quality African 7s competition.
Nigeria will be looking to go one better against Zimbabwe after a narrow semi-final loss in the RWC 7s regional qualifier. There will also be lots of anticipation should Nigeria play Tunisia after the two teams missed out on meeting at the regional qualifiers which saw Tunisia lose heavily to Zimbabwe in the final.
A recent global survey shows that since the 2007 International Rugby Board, IRB, World Cup rugby participation has grown by thirty three percent in Africa, almost double the rate of growth in the rest of the world, causing the IRB to focus increasing attention on developing the game in Africa.
Kenya, who narrowly lost their first HSBC 7s final in Wellington, New Zealand, two weekends ago, will start the tournament as favourites.
On their way to a dramatic final, which they lost against England in the last move of the match, slew the mighty All Blacks in their own back yard in the semi-final and had the New Zealand crowd cheering them on against England.
