Winner of the Women’s singles at the just concluded first
Lagos International Table Tennis claasic, Cecilia Akpan has been invited to the
Nigerian table tennis team following her excellent performance at the
competition which attracted thirteen countries.
Head coach of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Nosiru Bello,
said Cecilia had proven to be a member of Team Nigeria after she defested
African number five, Han Xing, of Congo Brazzaville and African number three,
Offiong Edem, in the Lagos International Table Tennis Classic.
Bello, said the competition was a blessing to the nation’s
table tennis players who according to him had not been opportuned to play in a
competition of this magnitude which attracted African best in the Men’s and
Women’s singles table tennis players, adding that the competition had revealed that the Nigeria
Table Tennis Federation, NTTF, must engaged its wards in international
competitions to garner experience.
The coach who was happy to win nine Gold medals out of ten
events decided, said Nigerian home based players were now
bold to confront other top African and World ranked ping pongers based on the performances of
Kazeem Makanjuola who defeated Bobocica Mihai to Italy, and Cecilia Akpan who
also beat Han Xing, of Congo Brazzaville.
He assured that the federation with the support of corporate
bodies would soon commence a developmental
programmes with a view of raising the standard of table tennis.
