The President of Badminton Confederation of Africa, Larry Byron Keys, has started a comprehensive developmental programme tagged “Road to Rio”, to give African badminton players opportunities of improving their skills in order to be among the rated badminton players in the world.
While speaking at the final of Lagos international Badminton classic, Keys, said the federation had sponsored African badminton players to series of badminton circuits and training camps under the tutelage of renowned foreign coaches to give them a lift in their chosen profession, stressing that the federation is also organizing programme for African badminton coaches to help develop their wards.
The BAC President, who acknowledged that funding have been the federation’s obstacle, advised African badminton players to work hard and compete in international tournaments in Europe and Asia in order to garner points to qualify for Olympic Games and All African Games among others.
He regarded the Lagos International Badminton classic had a huge success and the participations of non-African players made the event competitive and interesting, adding that African badminton players need to compete with the world’s best to become the best in the world.
While commending the Lagos State Government for sponsoring the competition of international magnitude, the BCA, President said the Nigeria Badminton federations needs the assistance of the National Sports Commission and other sports authorities to enables its athletes to features in series of competitions.
