IOC Awards 2018-2024 Broadcast Rights To SuperSport

SuperSport has acquired pay TV media rights in Sub-Saharan Africa for the next two Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games.

This renewed partnership with the International Olympic Committee will take in the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 and the Olympic Games in 2024 in a city yet to be selected.

The announcement follows the completion of a competitive tender in the region.

SuperSport will also work with the IOC to support the development of the Olympic Channel, including the production of localised content and linear distribution across the region.

IOC President Thomas Bach said: “We are delighted to be working with DStv SuperSport to be able to bring Olympic fans more coverage than ever before. I have visited many countries across Africa and have witnessed first-hand the important role that sport and the Olympic Games play on the African continent. The IOC redistributes 90 per cent of the revenue derived from its commercial agreements to support the development of sport around the world, including in Africa.”

Said Gideon Khobane, chief executive of SuperSport: “As long-time partners of the International Olympic Committee, SuperSport is delighted to have secured these excellent Olympic rights. The Games produce consistently good ratings, no doubt because of the non-stop drama and action that make for compelling viewing. We look forward to putting together a multi-platform, multi-channel offering that will reflect the Olympics in their full glory.”

Dalung Visits Nigeria's Athletes In Games Village.

Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon Dalung has visited Team Nigeria at the Olympic Games Village in Rio.
 

Dalung charged the athletes to be of good behavior and shun acts capable of disgracing the country.

He urged them to work hard towards achieving their set goals at the games, promising that their needs which include camp allowances will be duly paid before the end of the games .

" I charge you on behalf of our President Muhammadu Buhari to be good ambassadors of our great country Nigeria and desist from acts that will ridicule the nation. 

 

Obey camp rules and shun the temptation to use drugs for performance enhancement. It is better for you to come back with a good name than a stained medal. We urge you to embrace fair play, make friends and build bridges across the world with your good behavior.

Our President will be looking out for you and back home you can be rest assured of the home support from your numerous fans. I wish you well as you begin the quest for medals and honors at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. God bless Nigeria". Dalung said.

The athletes were in high spirit following the National U-23 team's 5-4 victory over Japan in their opening game.
They however pledged to work hard as their aiming to win medals in their various sports.

Nigeria's assistant captain and flag bearer at the opening ceremony Funke Oshonaike will begin her quest for a medal in the women's singles table tennis event today as well as Segun Toriola who is making a 7th appearance at the Olympics and team mate Aruna Quadri in the men's singles.
 

 

 

 

I.O.C Awards Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.

The International Olympic Committee, I.O.C, through the National Olympic Committee, N.OC , has awarded Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola with Olympic trophy for his  unparalleled contributions to the uplift of the Olympic movement and sports.

The I.O.C trophy which was given to the governor in recognition of his long period contribution to sports development also coincidence with the celebration of the landmark of Pierre de Colbertin, the symbol of Olympicsims.

While presenting the trophy to the Governor, president of National Olympic Committee, Sanni Ndanusa, said the N.O.C was honoured when the I.O.C, approved the award after they recommended to the standard of sports in the State.

Ndanusi, said the award presented to the Governor and four individuals in the world was a symbol of olympicism  and it is one of the greatest awards an individual could win.

"Today, your Excellence, we have looked through your performance and your government commitment and support towards the development of sports in Nigeria by way of facilities and regular competitions"

"It is on records at the National Olympic Committee,N.O.C, that the Governor and Government of Lagos State had hosted ten International Sports Classics that are points earning.This is the one of the biggest hit one can get in one country"

"N.O.C, was moved by his performance and recommend to the I.O.C that you should be given the highest award in the country."The award was approved by at the Executive Committee meeting and you are among the top five that were giving the award in the world"

He added that year 2013 was significant in the history of international Olympic Movement  as it marked the one hundred and fifty year anniversary of the modern Olympic movement.

In his  speech, Governor Fashola dedicated the award to the team that has ensured and contributed to the achievements, the athletes, coaches and the fans.

Meanwhile, the governor also received the Queen's Baton as the Commonwealth Games federation visited the state to drum support for the forthcoming games billed for Glasgow, Scotland.

On the I.O.C trophy, Fashola, said he received the award on behalf of the Lagos State Government, athletes who will acquint themselves appropriately and also wear the colours of Nigeria at the Games.

He reminded Rao who is native of Kanya and also a legal adviser to the CGF that Nigerian athletes had been working hard in long and short distance races as they should recogn with Nigerian athletes.

He appealed to the leadership of Commonwealth nations to work together and improve the life of the people, adding that the spirit of the Commonwealth Games transcend sports.

The Queen's Baton relay which is a global tour is creating awareness about the games which will be competed among the Commonwealth nations from July 23rd 2014.

Sharad Rao, Commonwealth Games Federation Head of delegation, who was honoured that the baton was in Nigeria, said the Commonwealth Games Federation,CGF, regarded the country not only as a member of the Commonwealth nations but one of the most important members of the CGF as he expects Nigerian athletes to win a lot of medals

According to him, the baton contains a message from the Queen to the athletes who will be participating in the Games and it would be read on the 23rd of July, 2014, adding that the baton would take 288 days and 190,000 kilometres going through all seventy member countries of CGF
