Okorodudu Optmisitc Of Boxing Laurels.

 Assistant coach of Nigeria Boxing Federation, Jeremiah Okorodudu, has assured  that the trio of Ogoke Edit, Ajagba Efe and Apache Efetobori who are still in contest for medals would increase the nation's medals haul on the Games medals table.

Nigerian boxers have recorded recorded a woeful outing in the on going Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as Sikiru Ojo, Ademuyiwa KEHINDE and Oladeji Oluwatoyin lost their bouts in the fight decided on Monday.

Ogoke Edith fight today in the quarter final bout while Ajagba Eve will fight against Goodwill Joseph of Australia on Friday at the Clyde Auditorium.

Okorodudu, said the Federation's technical team had advised the boxers to up their game ahead of the judges decision, stressing that the standard of officiating is below expectations.

According to him, Oluwatoyin Oladeji put a good performance against Adams Nicole of England in the Women's Fly weight category but the bout awarded to the British boxer, adding that they had been educating the boxers on the latest techniques of scoring points at international competitions.

  

 

  

Amahala Chika Fell Into Shock

Nigeria's Commonwealth weighlifting gold medalist, Chika Amalaha, is reporetdly in shock following the declaration by the doping control unit of the Commonwealth Games that her blood sample tested positive to banned drugs.

 

Chika, who two months ago in Botswana won three gold at the African youth championship has been celebrated as a revelation and asset for Nigeria weightlifting following her record setting performance in the women 53 kilogramme class but her feat tend to an embrassement to the nation and Chika who is already beaming in joy for setting a new Commonwealth games records.

 

Contacts with her managers, indicated that the Amalaha has fallen into shock, refusing to eat as she is unable to comprehend what is going on around her as she has requested for a B Sample test which will  be available tomorrow.

 

Spokesman of the Nigerian Olympic Committee, Tony Ubani, said the Nigerian delegation, including the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Gbenga Elegbeleye, and President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Sani Ndanusa, has called for calm, advising that the athlete should be given the benefit of the doubt until the result of the second test confirms the final truth.

 

If her sample B remain same, then there are indications are that she will be stripped of her gold medal, immediately and also expelled from the Commonwealth Games Village.

Elegbeleye Describes Okagbare's Gold Medal As Mother Of Al Gold Medals

Chef de mission of Team Nigeria, Gbenga Elegbeleye has hailed the spectacular performance of Blessing Okagbare in winning the Women’s 100 metres gold medal at the Commonwealth Games  

The Director General of National Sports Commission,NSC,  who described the medal as ‘’mother of all gold medals, said Okagbare had broken her personal best record by winning her first Commonwealth Games gold medal’.

The queen of African track shattered her Season’s best before also erasing the Games record with her 10.85 seconds win.

Elegbeleye, who is elated over Okgbarae feat of beating world best, Veronica Campbell- Brown of Jamaica and Keron Stewart, in the women’s one hundred race, said it was an easy victory as she trained hard to earn Nigeria her first Gold medal in the Athletic event. 

He also noted that all medals won at the Games deserve respect and praised Team Nigerian athletes who have been wonderful in fighting for honours for their fatherland out of the 71 Nations at the Commonwealth.

N.O.C Appeals Chika's Suspension.

Nigerian Olympic Commiitee, NO.C, has appealed against the suspension of Nigeria's female weightlifter, Amahala Chika who was provisionally suspended from the Commonwealth Games.

 

 

The athlete's A sample was found to contain both amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide that are prohibited as diuretics and masking agent under class s5 of WADA'S prohibition list.

 

The Chief Executive Officer of Commonwealth Games Federation, Mike Hooper, confirmed that Chika had been issued with anotice of disc;losure after returning an adverse analytical finding from an in- competition test om Friday, 25th of July, 2014.

 

Amalaha Chika, who won a Gold medal in the Women's 53 kilogramme division, has pursued her right to have her B sample tested which will take place at the accrditation centre in London on Wednesday.

 

 A check at the Nigerian Games Village in Galsgow, showed that other Nigerian athletes are unperturbed by Chika's suspension as they are in competition to make the nation proud at the tournament.

 

Nigeria witnessed similar trauma at the 2010 Dehli Commonwealth Games where the nation's athletes were suspension after random doping test was conducted on selected athletes.

Okagbare Win 100 Metres Gold Medal.

The queen of African track, Blessing Okagbare, has increased Nigeria's Gold medals haul to three after she won her first Commonwealth Games gold medal with a time of ten point eight five seconds in the Women's one hundred metres race concluded yesterday at the Hampden Park Stadium.

Okagbare set a new Commonwealth record of 10.85 seconds to win 100m gold .

Okagbare produced a fine piece of relaxed sprinting to leave Veronica Campbell-Brown in silver and Kerron Stewart bronze.

Okagbare, who breasted the tape with a time of ten point nine three seconds in the semi final race to qualify for the final, said she abandoned other major notable athletic championships to make her nation proud by winning a Gold medal, adding that it was not her concern who she is competing with as her priority is to win  Gold medal

NTTF Expresses Satisfaction With Bronze Medal.

Nigeria Table Tennis Federation,NTTF, has expressed satisfaction with the Bronze medal the nation's men's table tennis team won the Men's Team event decided today in the ongoing Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as Nigeria won a bronze medal.

 

Its President, Waheed Enitan Oshodi, who commended the ping pongers for a good well done to win a Bronze medal, said the feat was a result of hard work and commitment to regenerate the standard of table tennis in Nigeria.

 

The sport before now has nose- dived but Oshodi who doubles as the Commissioner for Sports in Lagos State and NTTF President, has been able to lift the standard of the sport through Lagos Internationa Table Tennis Classics, exposure to series of international tournaments and also paving the way for them to play professionally.

 

After lossing to Singapore in the semi final clash on Sunday, Team Nigeria returned to the zenith of table tennis after beating India 3-1 today to claim the bronze  medal in the men’s team event.

Despite the 3-0 bashing suffered by Toriola against Sharath Achanta, who is rated 40 in the world, Nigeria’s rave of the moment, Aruna Quadri restored parity for Nigeria after beating Harmeet Desai

11- 7, 11- 8, 9 - 11, 11- 5.
  

A turning point for Nigeria came in the third match when Toriola and Ojo Onaolapo partnered to overcome Indian pair of Anthony Arputharaj and Desai, 3- 11, 11- 9, 11- 5, 9 - 11,11- 9, to give Nigeria a 3-2 win.

The fourth game between Onaolapo and Achanta became the biggest upset to be recorded in the tournament when Onaolapo who is  rated above 300 in the world overpowered the Indian world’s number 40,11- 9, 3- 11, 11- 7, 11 - 5 to give Nigeria the desired medal in the event.
 

The singles and doubles events of the competition begin on Tuesday with all eyes on Singapore, England, India and Nigeria.

NSC To Engage Nigeria's Athletes In International Tournaments.

 

 

 The National Sports Commission,NSC, has said that the commission would create a viable platform for Nigeria's athletes to compete favourable with their counterparts in the world with regular international competitions ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

 

Its Director General, who made this statement after Shogbamu Waheed, a boxer loss to Davies Zack of Wales in the sixty- four kilogramme in the men's light weight category, commended the pugilist to giving his opponents a good fight especially in the first- two round of the fight which went in favor of Zack based of judges unanimous decision of three points to nothing

 

Elegbeleye said the Commonwealth Games had revealed that Nigeria's athletes are very good, strong and determined but they lack technical depth of sports when compared to their counterparts from other Commonwealth nations who were not as strong as they were but they were technically better.

 

He said the Glasgow Commonwealth Games which was preparatory for the Olympic Games in Brazil, in 2016, would help the National Sports Commission to engage the athletes in series of training tours to improve their skills in a bid to make the nation proud at the Olympic Games.

 

Gowon Charges Athletes To Make Nigeria Proud.

Former Head of State, Yakub Gowon, says the number of medals Nigerian athletes have won so far in ongoing Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, will encourage Team Nigeria to work hard with the view of working of surpaasing that past records in the Games.

Gowon, who was elated over the performance of a sixteen year old Amahala Chika who won Gold medal in the 53 nkilogramme and also setting a new Commonwealth games records, said the feat had shown that the nation is blessed with credible and world class athletes who could make the country proud at in ternational competitions.

While advising the athletes to always put in their best, said the success recorded at the Games is not only for them but the nation, thus he charged them to always look for the good of Nigeria while represent the nation at any internation tournament.

N.O.C To Introduce Fencing And Archery

President of Nigeria Olympic Committee, Sanni Ndanusa, has assured that fencing and arhery would be added to the list of sports Nigeria will be competing for at the International Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games.

The NOC President, said the Committee had gotten the assurance of Gombe State Governor,Ibrahim Hassan Wambo, to adequately provide neccessary assistance to growth of fencing and archery at the Games

 

While appreciateing the commitment anddedication of the athletes towards winning laurels, Ndanusa, said the commission was working hard to ensure that the Team Nigeria win more than ten Gold medals.

Danagogo Set To Pay Athletes Allowance.

The Minister of Sports, Tammy Danagogo, has assured that athletes allowances would be paid before they leave Scotland the venue of this year's edition of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Sports Minister, who made this statement following complains from Nigerian athletes that they were yet to recieve their due allowances, said he had directed the officials of the National Sports Commission,NSC, to shelve the old style of payment and pay the athleytes according to their demands in a bid to boost their morale to further win laurels for the nation.

Before now, it has been the usual practice of the NSC to pay the athletes at thend of every international competitions believing that the gesture would distract them from achieving their set objectives.

But the Minister, said the Commission wanted to encourage and motivate the athletes to make new Commonwealth Games, surpas their past records, thus, the Commission must be able to listen to the yarning of the athletes who according to him are reay and determined to win Gold medals in their respective sporting activities.

Danagogo,who is happy with the new records set by Amahala Chika in 56 kilogramme, weightlifting event where set she erased Augustina Nwokolo records set at thlast Comonwalth games in New Delhi, India in 2010, said he was hopeful that Nigeria would still win many Gold medals, adding that the medals won so far had rekindled the nation's hope that the nation would be counted on the medals table.

Nigeria is placed eight on the medals table with One Gold, two Silver and One Bronze medals.

Adesanmi Oluwatoyin Win Gold Medal.

 

The flag of Nigeria has again been hoisted in the weightlifting event of the ongoing Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as the duo of Adesanmi Oluwatoyin and Okoli Obioma won Gold and Silver medals in the Women’s sixty- three kilogramme in decided on Sunday at the Clyde Auditorium..

Punam Yadav from India clinched a Bronze medals when she amased the total of two hundred and two kilogramme in the Snatch, Clean Jerk event.

 

Adesanmi Oluwatoyin who clinched Gold medal, lifted ninety- two in three attempts in Snatch and one hundred and fifteen in the Clean and Jerk to amass a total points of two hundred and seven.

 

While Okoli Obioma, won a Silver medal after she lifted ninety kilogramme in three attempts in the Snatch event and lifted one hundred and seven kilogramme in the Clean and Jerk to amass two hundred and seven points.

 

Despite earning the same points of two hundred and seven, Adesanmi Oluwatoyin, was crowned the champion of Women’s Sixty- three kilogramme because her body weight of sixty- one point five eight is lower to Okoli Obioma whose body weight is sixty point five seven.

 

Obioma, Dehli 2010 Commonwealth Games champion, would have set a record a Commonwealth Games records but she failed to lift one hundred and twenty three kilogramme in the Clean and Jerk to overtake Adesanmi Olouwatoyin.

 

Following the feat, Nigeria now tops the Medals table in the weightlifting event with two Gold three Silver and One Bronze medals as India is second with two Gold, One Silver and Four Bronze medals.

Nigeria's Men's Team Picks Semi final Ticket.

 

 The determination of Nigeria's sensational table tennis player,Aruna Quadri has earned Nigeria a semi final ticket in the Men's Team event in the Table Tennis in the ongoing 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games after defeating Australia in the quarter final.

 

The table tennis hall of Scotstou Sports Campus was frenzy was it was the turn of Aruna Quadri to complete the Men's Team game since the major points was two- all, (3-2, 1- 3, 2- 3,3- 2).

 

Quadri, who won the African top sixteen tournament in Lagos, dealt with the Australian player in last singles games which ended three straight set win in favour of Nigeria,3- 0.

 

Nigeria will now meet Singapore in the Semi final fixed for Sunday.

 

  

A Mixed Reaction In Boxing Camp

It is a mixed feelings for the Nigerian boxers taking part in the ongoing Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as the nation recorded a defeat and a win in the preliminaries of round decided today at the SECC,Clyde auditorium.

 

Joseph Oto, a Nigerian pugilist lost to Alexander Micheal of Trinidad and Tobago with unanimous decision of three points to nothing in the Men's light weight category while Shogbamu Waheed out punched Bangke Toaua of Kiribati by judges unanimous decision of three points to nothing to qualify for the next bout.

 

While speaking on his defeat, Oto, who will be feature in Commonwealth games for the first time, said he had put the defeat behind him and he is concentrating on the forthcoming African Games and other international competitions, stressing that he was pained because he had trained adequately for the Games.

 

The boxer, said Alexander Micheal of Trinidad and Tobago deprieved him of exhibiting his boxing prowess as he always hold him firmly, adding that after several warnings, he was disappointed that Micheal's point was deducted.

 

 

Waheed, who lost to an Indian pugilist at the quarter final round of the last Commonwealth Gamesin Delhi, India, in 2010, said his target was to surpass his past Commonwealth Games records and win a Gold medals in order to make the nation happy.

Amahala Chika Set New Commonwealth Games Records

 

Nigeria's female weightlifter, Amalaha Chika, has set a new Commonwealth Games records as she won the nation's first ever Gold medal in the ongoing 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth games in the women's 53 kilogramme in the weightlifing event decided today at the Clyde auditorium.

 

She erased the record held by a Nigerian weightlifter, Augustina Nwokolo, who was seventeen year old when she won the Women's 48 kilogramme in Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

 

Chika, a sixteen year old athletes, who left Toua Dika of Papua N Guinea to settle for a Silver medal after a great tussle, recorded eighty- five points in snatch and one hundred and ninety- six points in Clean and Jerk, to top group A with the total of one hundred and ninety- six points.

 

Speaking on Chika's feat, Head Coach of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Emmanuel Oshomal, said the success recorded by his athletes was a testimony that the Federation have a compactive training programmes which is geared at producing future chamopions, adding that the victory is a evidence that Nigerian weightlifters are very strong because it took them barely two months to prepare them for the Games.

 

He said the federation technical crew subjected the athletes to series of rigorous training programme knowing that countries like India, Australia, England and Papua N Guinea would a threat to their quest of winning medals at the Games,stressing that they were not distraction despite shortage of funds to support their training programmes.

 

Oshomal, who promised to win more gold medals,said the build up to the Galsgow 2014 Commonwealth Games started during last year's Commonwealth Games qualifier in Malaysia.

The gold medalist, promised to repeat the same feat at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with proper preparation in order to prevent poor performance, adding that she would be dedicated to training,determined to win laurels and discipline to achieve success.

 

 

    

Efe Ajagba Qualifies For Quarter final

 

 A Nigerian boxer, Ajagba Efe, has qualified for the quarter final in the Men's Super Heavy weight category, plus ninety- one kilogramme, in the ongoing 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, in Scotland after defeating Fa Uaine of Tonga in the round of sixteen bout decided today at the Clyde auditorium.

 

Efe, who is competing in his first international bout, recorded an outstanding result of maximum thirty points as the judges unanimously accorded him the victory having knocked down Fa Uaine in round two.

 

The boxer, who dedicated the victory to Nigeria, said his target was to win a gold medal and he would not relent in his efforts to place his name of Commonwealth Games hall of fame, adding that his punches were too much for Uaine to contend with, hence the reason he was knocked down in round two.

 

Efe, explained that he effectively made use of his height which according to himwas at the detriment of his opponents as he did not hav ethe effontry to come out of his shield to box him, adding that he would work on his mistakes in order to qualify for the semi final.

 

Efe will fight against a South African boxer,Schaffer Paul who defeated Leui Paddy Junior of Samoa by unanimous decision in the round of sixteen bout.

 

The quarter final bout will come up nest Tuesday at the Hall four, secc, Clyde auditorium.

 

  

Commonwealth Games: Oshodi Calls On Corporate Bodies To Support Table Tennis.

 Nigeria Table Table Federation, NTTF, is optimistic that Nigeria;s table tennis team will register the nation's name of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games medals table by fighting hard to win laurels at the games as the country has qualified for the round of sixteen in the Women's and Men's Team table tennis events.

 

Its President, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, while speaking on the performance of the Nigeria's table tennis teams, said the team needed to put in their best in order to make the nation proud at the Games,stressing that the distrupted training programmes of the female ping pongers have affected them especially in their match against India that are among the seeded nations.

 

Confident that the male team will go far in the tournament following their performance of Nigeria at the last organised Lagos International Table Tennis Classic, Oshodi, prayed that Nigeria would not  play against Singapore national team who have five Chinese nationals playing for them, adding that he would prefer a situation where Nigeria and Singapore meet in the final of the tournament.

 

He said the federation's relationship with Joola, one of the world,s producers of table tennis table tenis equipment, was part of their Private Partnership deal to drive the growth of table tennis in Nigeria,adding that the gesture would encourage other prominent makers of table tennis equipment and private individuals to identify with the NTTF.

 

In the matches played today,Nigeria defeated Narbados by three straight set in the Women's Team event while the Nigerian male team outplayed Kiribati to scale through to the round of sixteen. 

 

 

 

 

 

NSC Yet To Pay Althletes Allowance.

As the 2014 Glasgow Games enters day three, Nigerian athletes have been complaining bitterly about the unfriendly and unsportsman attitude of the National Sports Commission,NSC, towards their quest of winning laurels at the Games.

 

The athletes, some of whom have been in Scotland for over a week, complained that officials of the NSC are yet to pay their allowances, no provision of competition kits and tools, as officials of some Federations have to seek assistance from other countries for tools, a move they considered as a disgrace and embarassing.

 

An athlete, who spoke with our correspondent, explained that he had been making use of his  Automated Teller Mchine,ATM, Master card to withdraw money from his bank account, adding that the NSC had only paid the sum of ninety- thousand naira to them as training camp allowance which was paid in June while in Nigeria.

 

Reports have it that Ghanaian weightliters were in London, England, for a two month training tour in readiness for the Games and there is still a question mark over the money earmarked for unaccomlished training tour of Nigerian athletes for the Games.

 

Though, the Director General had met with the athletes at the Games village with the hope of paying their allowances and also to make available their training kits, yet the athletes were sad over the development as many of them concluded that it is their personal motivation that is driving them to fight hard to win laurels and not the unfulfilled promises and non-commitment of the NSC to their basic necessary materials.
