Nigeria To Organise Wheelchair Tennis Futures in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja will be agog next Monday for the Puma Engineer ITF Wheelchair Tennis Championship.

This is the first time Nigeria will be privilege to host the tournament as it brings lots of excitement to the indigenous tennis players even though the prize money for the week-long event which would feature men and women is three thousand, five hundre dollars.

The championship is facilitated by former President of nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, Sani Ndanusa, as no fewer than 15 Nigerian tennis will compete for points alongside other participants from at least five other African countries.

Ndanusa noted that the championship would serve as springboard to the Nigeria’s readiness to outdo all its major rivals particularly, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia and Kenya for next years’ African Wheelchair Tennis Championship slated for February in Ghana.

Meanwhile, Nigerian players are schedule to begin a week-long training starting Monday in Lagos ahead of the championship.

According to the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Wheelchair Tennis Federation, Anthony Idaye, the players all featured in the national ranking tournament which ended in Lagos on Saturday where Alex Adewale and Kafayat Omisore emerged champions in the men and women categories.

Wheelchair Tennis: Nigeria Withdraws From World Team Cup

Nigeria’s growing reputation in global wheelchair tennis has suffered a huge dent following the country’s withdrawal from the BNP Paribas World Team Cup which served off Monday at the Nieuwe Sloot Tennis Centre in Alphen, Netherlands. The World Team Cup is wheelchair tennis version of the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup.

Nigeria won the African qualifiers held in March in Kenya by beating Morocco and there was widespread optimism that the country could grab a promotion to the World Group I following the rapid improvement of the game in the country which was highlighted by the nation’s participation at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the 2012 Olympics in London which makes the development a major setback for the game in the country.

The triumph in Kenya was the third in a row for the country’s men team which makes them Africa’s top-ranked nation but the gap between them and their nearest rivals, Morocco will get closer at the end of the tournament due to their unexpected absence.

Nigeria’s place was occupied by Romania following Sunday evening’s draw which has Canada and Italy in Pool 4.

Nigeria's Wheelchair Tennis Beat Morocco To Qualify For World Championship.

Nigeria's Wheelchair Tennis team has qualified for the World Wheelchair Tennis Team Cup holding in Holland in May after defeating Morocco in the 2014 African Wheelchair Tennis Qualifying Championship in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday.

Nigeria recorded a two- one victory against Morocco  to emerge winners of the 2014 African Wheelchair Tennis Qualifying Championship.

The  duo of Wasiu Yusuf and Alex Adewale both won their singles matches which was enough to clinch the continent’s sole ticket to the World Team Cup billed for Holland in May.

Two-time Paralympian Yusuf  who was stretched to the limit by Ayoub Etali won the game by two set to one,  6-4, 3-6, 7-5 against his opponent who is the top-ranked player in his country.

Adewale, a London 2012 Paralympian, was equally given a run for his talent as he defeated  Ihaj Boukartacha, 6-2,1-6,6-1.

African W/chair Tennis C'ship: Nigeria Beat Kenya

Nigeria's whhelchair tennis team beganits title defence of the African Wheelchair Tennis Championship in Nairobi Kenya on a bright note with a comprehensive 3-0 win over the host nation.

Despite arriving less than 24 hours to the match, Nigeria, through Wasiu Yusuf beat Rajabu abdalah 6- luv, 6- luv while Alex Adewale outplayed Caleb Odiyo 6- luv, 6- 1.

The duo who featured at the London 2012 Paralympic Games  capped their impressive display with their Kenyan opponents  6- luv,6- ;uv in the doubles.

They are scheduled to meet Egypt today in the six-nation event which has Morocco, Tanzania and Uganda in group B.

Nigeria is aiming to win the Men's title for the fourth consecutive year. The winner will represent Africa at the World championship billed for tje Netherlands later this year.
