Yellow.Delta State Swimmers Are My Threat.

National Sports Festival Gold Medalist, Yeiyah Yellow, has said that the  brilliant performance of Delta-State Swimmers at the just concluded first Lagos International Swimming classic would spur him to begin active training programme in January 2014, ahead of this year's edition of National Sports Festival, in Calabar, Cross-River state.

Yellow, who Swam for Nigeria Police at the Lagos International Swimming Classic and won five Gold, three silver and three bronze medals, said the Delta-State had been training in a river for a couple of months ahead of the Games and they stand the chance of wining laurels than others who are yet to find a suitable swimming facilities to train with.

The All African Games Silver medalist, said his training sessions at the swimming section of Lagos International Airport Hotel, Ikeja,  had not been adequate to enable him successfully defend his national title, adding that Delta-State Swimmers are really posing threat to outwit him as the national champion.

The Olympian, said he would needed a minimum of four to five months comprehensive training programmes to rekindle similar feat that place him above his contemporaries in sport, adding that next year's edition of NSF, would be tougher because it is opened to elite athletes, hence the reason why he must work extra length to defend his title.

He commended the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Ray, Fashola for his immense contribution and support for the growth of sports in Nigeria, adding that the competition had enabled the Nigerian top rated simmers tp assess their performance before the Games.

Schools Take To Pool At Lagos International Swimming Classics.

Hundreds of schools in Lagos will on Friday begin hostilities at the Lagos International Swimming Classics holding at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

According to the Championship Coordinator, Babatunde Fatai-Williams. Secondary schools in Lagos would start their events with the winners in each event determine after the conclusion of the event based on their finishing time.

Fatai-Williams, who is also the President of the Nigeria Swimming Federation (NSF) said that over 65 swimmers were registered for the open category with most of the national champions as well as athletes from Ghana, Senegal and Benin taking part in the heat events yesterday, while winners in each event would be decided in the evening of each day.

 “We are excited with the turnout of athletes for this tournament and we are also hoping that records will be shattered while new talents would also be discovered. In the schools event, the winners in each will be determined based on their finishing time and we are expecting secondary schools students to be part of the event,” the NSF boss said.

 Over 52 events would be competed in the open category of the N5.8 million prize money tournament, which ends on Sunday November 10.

 Chairman of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), Wahid Oshodi, charges the swimmers to give their best, as athletes unearthed at the tournament would be nurtured to stardom.

 The four-day tournament has been sanctioned by the African Swimming Confederation (CANA).

Ghana Confirms For Lagos International Swimming Classics

 Ghana is the first African swimming  team to confirm its participation in this week’s Lagos International Swimming Classics.

  According to the Championship Coordinator, Babatunde Fatai-Williams, Ghana has indicated its interest to be part of the N5.8million prize money tournament holding at the Teslim Balogun Stadium from Thursday November 7 to 11.

  He however, disclosed that the Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the Lagos Sports Classics, is still expecting entries from other foreign countries while most of the national champions in the country have already being confirmed for the four-day competition.

 Athletes are expected to compete in the open and schools categories with top three in each event carting home mouthwatering cash prizes.

  For the Chairman of MOC, Wahid Oshodi, the swimming classics promises to be exciting as top swimmers from the region and beyond are expected to be part of the tournament.

  He however, emphasised that the tourney is aimed at exposing athletes to international standard and also to attract top athletes to the tournament.

  “We are hoping for a good tournament and for us, this is one of the ways to help our athletes. Having concluded some sporting events lined up for the Lagos Sports Classics, we are hoping that the swimming classics will also be more competitive and colourful,” he said.

Over 300 swimmers are expected to jostle for honors at the Lagos International Swimming Classics as most of Nigeria’s top swimmers yearning to be part of the competition.

The competition is in continuation of the series of events lined up for the Lagos Sports Classics, as the Main Organising Committee,M.O.C has staked over five point eight million naira for the four-day Lagos International Swimming Classics.

The swimming classics is expected to commence on Thursday, seventh of  November 7 and end on Sunday tenth of Novemeber at the Swimming section of the Teslim Balogun Stadium with athletes competing in the open and schools categories.

According to the Chairman of MOC, Wahid Oshodi, the classics is being organized to expose athletes to international standard and also to attract top athletes to the tournament.

“The swimming classics is also one of the series of events line up for the Lagos Sports Classics and we hope to stage another world class event just we had done during the table tennis and chess tournaments,” he said.

The tournament director, Babatunde Fatai-Williams, the tournament has been sanctioned by the African Swimming Confederation (CANA) and it hopes to attract the best swimmers in the continent.

“Hopefully by this week, we will be able to confirm the profile of the some of the foreign swimmers that will grace the championship.
