Nigerian Rugby Team To Feature In CAR Moroccan Sevens

Nigeria lost their second test against an infinitely more experienced Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday in the re-formatted Africa Cup Group C1 tournament in Gaborone, Botswana this week.

On arrival in Gaborone last week the Nigeria team were advised that due to the non-arrival of Cameroun the six team format had been reduced to a five team format and a new timetable and draw had taken place.

Instead of three games each team would now play just two games each. Nigeria, originally scheduled to play Mauritius, Cote d’Ivoire and Botswana would have to face only Mauritius and Cote d’Ivoire.

Nigeria team management registered dissatisfaction with the fact that the draw had not been conducted in the presence of all teams, however in the interest of building rugby unity and among other African rugby playing nations agreed to go ahead.

“Nigeria and CDI, had to travel the furthest to get here to play and yet both teams have both their tests scheduled with just a three day gap between them.

Nigeria played on Sunday and Wednesday, Cote d’Ivoire played Wednesday and will play again on Saturday whileMauritius, Zambia and Botswana all have a six day break between their open games on played on Sunday and their second game to be played on Saturday” Having lost the opening game against Mauritius (22-26) Nigeria was optimistic of their chances against 48th ranked IRB team Cote D’Ivoire.

Nigeria had fought back strongly against Mauritius coming back well in the second half after being down 20-3 at one stage to outscore Mauritius three tries to two on the day.

In the only test Nigeria played in 2011 Mauritius had beaten Nigeria by 30 points. Coach, Steve Lewis, was not sure what sort of game Cote d’Ivoire would play. Being West African they were physically bigger and stronger than Mauritius were but they were also much more experienced at this level of rugby.

The loose head prop against Nigeria had been a young beginner when he played for CDI at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa. As in the opening game Nigeria were contesting possession well and driving up field when in the 8th minute the ball was thrown to the back of the Nigerian line out but thrown too long and it was scooped up by Cote d’Ivoire and they ran 60 metres of the opening try. Nigeria failed to capitalise on numeric superiority when the francophone hooker was yellow carded and sent off for 10 minutes early in the first half.

Tiwa Obisesan (Kent University), playing Fly Half instead of his usual inside centre position reduced the lead to four points with a well taken penalty on the half hour. Inexperience at this level against such experienced opposition cost Nigeria when having scored they gave away penalties.

Two penalties for infringement at the rucks and a very well srtuck 40 metre drop goal from open play stretched the French speaking neighbours lead to 16-3. Obisesan closed the gap to 16-9 with two penalties and the Nigerians began to increase their pace and the Nigerians’ physicality had Cote d’Ivoire scrambling back in defence.

Particularly impressive again was Ejike, the livewire number seven flank. Nigeria wereturning the tide, hitting the rucks and mauls with true aggression and counter rucking as the coach had exhorted them to do.

On the 46th minute the counter rucking was so effective the ball popped out on the Nigerian too quickly and was scooped up by CDI’s open side flank and the counter attack was swift and deadly with another try under the posts. 23-9 Two penalties later, with the first converted by Obisesan, Nigeria opted to spurn the possible three points on offer by going for posts and instead opted to kick for touch, to gain ground with the throw in to come (kicking the ball into touch from a penalty gives the throw in to the team awarded the penalty and not the opposition as is the case when the ball is kicked into touch during normal play).

Nigeria lost the lineout from their throw and had to fall back into their half to start the attack again. Nigeria’s bigger younger forwards were putting intense pressure on the scrumand with the crowd getting behind them the underdogs fought back with a long range rolling maul.

CJ Osazuwa, Obi Wilson, FrancisUgwuand Junior Harrison all drove the ball up well until Oluwale Doherty crashed over for the well worked forward try. The conversion was missed and with it the last scoring opportunity for Nigeria.

Two late penalties against Nigeria, one for a late tackle could as easily have been blown as a legitimate attempted kick charge down, gave a slightly lopsided final score to what was a much more closely contest game than the final score would indicate.

So now with the Africa Cup behind us valuable lesson have been learned and the focus of attention for Nigerian international rugby shift to preparation for the Confederation of African Rugby sevens in Morocco in September, and the chance to qualify for the IRB 7s World Cup in Russia next year.

The bulk of that squad will come from the faster, fleet footed backs and loose forwards who began to gel into a formidable team this past week. Nigerian rugby has a long way to go, but this past week has shown the route to follow.

Delta State Denies Team Lagos Double Victories As Sam Ocheho Invitational Handball Championship.

Lagos handball teams began their quest to win the maiden Sam Ocheho invitational handball championship with a victory and a draw as the tournament got off to an explosive start at the Sportshall of the Lagos State Sports Council, Rowe Park, Yaba.

The first match of the inter-state championship pitched Team Lagos ladies team 1 against their contemporary from Ekiti state in a one-sided game that saw the home side cruise to a 41-13 victory.

The girls from Ekiti were simply not a match for their host and the gulf between the two teams was enormous as Lagos pulled away in the first half and ripped off their hapless opponent in the second half.

The last match of the opening day was not only the best but a classic with Team Lagos male side squared up against highly charged Delta team whose vociferous approach to the contest helped them opened scoring and dictate early play.

Delta held the momentum at half time but the coach Henry Obi tutored lads exploded right from the start of the second half as the home team crawled back and build up a sizeable lead.

Team Lagos lost the urgency, constantly slowing down the pace, and they hit a self- destructive button when they evaporated in the final minutes of the explosive match.

A spirited performance from Delta helped them tied the match 23-23 as the team share the spoils and earn a point.

The round robin format championship continues on Monday inside the Mobolaji Johnson indoor sports hall of the Rowe park sports centre, Yaba withTeam Lagos ladies team 2 open proceedings for day 2 against Delta while 5 other mouth watering match up are also on the card.

The Sam Ocheho invitational handball championship organised by the patron of the Lagos state Handball Association and member, Nigeria handball federation, Samuel Ocheho is his contribution to the development of the game in Nigeria and the one week tournament is to regenerate interest for the game at the grassrooots level while preparing the players for the 18th National Sports Festival, "EKO 2012" .

They qualified after competiting at the Kids Golf International African championships which took place at the IBB golf and Country Club in April 2012 and at the U.S Kids European Championships in Gullane Scotland in June 2012.

Unfortunately, Samuel Manchang from Rayfield Golf Club, Plateau State will not be able to attend the World Championships in North Carolina this month as the earliest interview date he could get for an American visa is January 2013.

"It is ridiculous". We obtained British visas for 12 golfers in June within 4 weeks of applying. At this rate, we would never be able to play in the U.S as we don't know who will qualify or not a year in advance. Competitions are in April and June while the World Championships are held in July of the same year.

"We technically will only ever have about 6 weeks to prepare. The U.S visa process has to be reviewed or a separate process for expedited visas such as this must be put in place and even if it means to pay more, then that is better." All efforts to contact the U.S Consular and expedite his interview date failed.

Commenting on the development, the President of the Kids Golf International Prince Kehinde Thompson said he is gutted by the process.

They are already at the venue and will be competiting over 3 days at the world class Pinehurst Golf Resort in North Carolina.

Eagles Back In Camp August 19.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has tentatively scheduled the resumption of camping of the Super Eagles for the Nations Cup duel against Liberia for Sunday, August 19, 2012.

Super Eagles spokesman, Ben Alaiya, quotes team Scribe, Dayo Enebi Achor, as saying that the date was picked with all logistics and other considerations taken note of by the NFF and the national team technical crew headed by Stephen Okechukwu Keshi.

This latest development becomes necessary following conflicting reports of the date that the national team will resume camp for the game against Liberia and a likely international friendly before the game that has been scheduled for September 8, in the Liberian capital Monrovia.

The team is expected to resume the following day after resumption to camp as there are ndications are that the NFF has not relented in the search for a friendly for the national team before the game against Liberia.

Till date Big Boss Stephen Keshi has kept his list close to his chest, especially as his four assistants have been scouting around the globe for Nigerian born players for invitation for the game and future games of the national team.

The list of players expected in camp will be made public few days before the August 19 date, when the technical crew must have made up its mind on those who will make the cut.

Lewis Commends Nigerian Rugby Team Despite Lossing To Mauritius.

Head Coach of the Nigerian Rugby Team to the Confederation of African Rugy Championship in Botswana, Steve Lewis, has said that there are many positives to be taken from the defeat to Mauritius Rugby team.

"An obviously gutted Steve Lewis, Nigeria’s coach, said there were many positives to be taken from the match, “The most encouraging aspect of the performance was the manner in which our boys reacted to adversity" said Lewis.

Lewis, said the most encouraging aspect of the performance was the manner in which his players reacted to adversity, adding that many teams would have folded with 20 - 3 points down, the Nigerian Rugby team knuckle down and fought back strongly scoring three tries to two.

"Down 20-3 many teams would have folded but the lads knuckled down and fought back strongly scoring three tries to two. Another few minutes and the result could have gone our way.”

The team's captain, explained that they were unable to get their desired result but they correct all the mistakes observed in the course of the match particularly in the first half as they would leave the defeat behind them to concentrate on Wedenesday match.

“We didn’t get the result we were looking for but we know how to fix what went wrong, particularly in the first half and we’ll be working hard ahead of Wednesday’s match, and we’ll come back stronger” said a disappointed Nigerian captain David Akinluyi after the match.

Nigerian Rugby Team Still Stronger In Defeat.

A gallant Nigerian rugby side fought back strongly after going behind 17-3 in the first half to outscore Mauritius in the second half eventually losing 22-26 in the opening match of the Confederation of African Rugby Africa Cup in Botswana.

The home team, Botswana, managed to hold on to their first half lead to beat Zambia 23-15 in the second match of the day.

“We didn’t get the result we were looking for but we know how to fix what went wrong, particularly in the first half and we’ll be working hard ahead of Wednesday’s match, and we’ll come back stronger” said a disappointed Nigerian captain David Akinluyi after the match.

After a simple opening ceremony, in which the Nigerians were the only team to sing their country’s anthem when the Botswana armed forces band played all the national anthems they took to the field against a well drilled Mauritian team who had brought in 16 players from England. Last year Mauritius beat Nigeria 42-10 in Nigeria’s only test of the year in a chilly Johannesburg.

The game played in perfect conditions for rugby opened with both teams fairly nervous at the big occasion. The Nigerians were bigger and physically stronger than the Mauritians but with only five training sessions together as a squad, but with no opportunity to have a practice match, the team struggled to find continuity in the opening 20 minutes.

In the 6th minute with Nigeria pressing hard on the Mauritian 5 metre line Nigeria flipped the ball off the ground which was intercepted by the Mauritian wing who sprinted the length of the pitch for the opening try of the tournament. The try was converted and Nigeria was down 7 nil in as many minutes.

Robert Boulle, the Mauritius full back added another three points after Nigeria collapsed the scrum on their own 22 metre line giving away a penalty. 10 nil.

The game was swinging from one end of the pitch to the other when Mauritius kicked ahead and Nigeria dotted down behind their own line.

The ensuing drop out went out on the full and from the resulting scrum the Mauritian 8th man picked up from the back and went to the blind side, the ref accidentally got in the way of Nigeria’s defense before the number 8 passed to the wing who scored under the posts for a converted try. 17 nil.

The ref subsequently apologised to Akinluyi, the captain but didn’t reverse his decision. Nigeria’s scrum was struggling to settle and gave away another penalty on the 35th minute when the front row collapsed.

Up stepped the metronomic Boule and knocked over another easy penalty. Other teams would have dropped their heads and given up. Not this team of feisty young men though.

With the clock ticking down to half time Nigeria got their first points on the board when Tiwa Obisesan, playing fly half, put over Nigeria’s first penalty.

After half time Nigeria kicked up a gear and strong running was getting them over the gain line (the imaginary line drawn between both sets of forwards during a scrum, ruck, maul or line-out).

Particularly impressive was the open side flank Ejike Uzoigbe who plays his club rugby for Worthing in England. The scrum started to get more cohesion too giving the back some front foot ball to play with. A definite crowd favourite was the man mountain Nsa “Junior” Harrison.

For such a big man he is remarkably agile and fast on his feet making him a human wrecking ball. He was often in the thick of things in the tight loose and made one break faking to kick a grubber through before breaking three tackles before off-loading to the support which went over the whitewash putting narrowing the gap to 8 points.

Four minutes later the ref advanced a Mauritius penalty 10 metres when one of the Nigerian forwards supposedly talked back after he had awarded a penalty. The reset penalty was now in striking range of the deadly accurate Boulle who slotted it between the posts.

Up 26-15 with five minutes to go Mauritius were under intense pressure with Nigeria pressing hard to a try. It wasn’t exactly the siege of Mafikeng (the Boer war siege of Mafikeng fifty kilometres up the road) but it wasn’t far from it.

The pressure told and Mauritius went off their feet at a ruck on their 22, Nigeria took a quick tap penalty and stormed Doyin Layade stormed over beside the posts which was converted by the increasingly confident Obisesan. An obviously gutted Steve Lewis, Nigeria’s coach, said there were many positives to be taken from the match,

“The most encouraging aspect of the performance was the manner in which our boys reacted to adversity. Down 20-3 many teams would have folded but the lads knuckled down and fought back strongly scoring three tries to two. Another few minutes and the result could have gone our way.”

Nigeria's Rugby Team Off To African Rugby Cup In Botswana.

Written By sportsweight.blogspot.com on Friday, July 20, 2012 | 1:05 AM

Nigerian Rugby Team To Botswana.
A team of twenty five Nigerian rugby players and four officials have  departed the country on Thursday for the African Rugy 15's Cup in Botswana billed to start over this weekend till next Sunday.

The Squad which comprises of Nigerian United Kingdom based professional rugby players and home based players will confront, Cote D'Ivoire, on Sunday, Botswana and Mauritius subsequently.

Chief Coach of the Nigerian Rugby team, Steve Lewis, ho joined the team three months ago, said he was confident that the crop of rugby players at his disposal would make impact at the tournament because they are exposed to level rugby competitions.

"We have budden talents though we do not have enough time for preparations. The quality of the teams chnages because the game is layed once a year.It is very difficult to know the quality of you oppositions.Am confident that giving the talents will now have both players from within Nigerian and Nigerian in exile in United Kingdom, we could make significant impact at the tournament"

Lewis, said the challenges of not being a ble to converge at a choice venue to train as a team would jeopardise the team's committment and determination to outplay its oppositions, Cote D'Ivoire on Sunday in their fist outing, adding that the team's technical crew wold film and review matches of Botswana and Mauritius so as to understand their style of play.

"We do not real play Ivory Coast. In terms of game no,study our opposition.W e don't reall have that in the opening game.We would be able to observe the next two oppositions during the tournament. We are going to films match, review it and be prepared for them.It is a mixed team of tree or four guys in the squad who are playing or just finished playing top level professional rugby in England. We do have some guys who play in Nigeria but who are exposed to top level competitions"

On the Olympic Games, the coach said Nigeria stood a chnace to feature in the rugby event of the 2020 Olympic Games, adding that it would be hard for the team to qualify for the 2016 as the International Olympic Committee had already shortlisted twelve Rugby playing nations.

The team captain, David Akinkuyi of Cambridge University, England, said they were working hard to amke history in the African Rugy 15's Cup in Botswana by returning home with the tournament's trophy.

"On one part is has to do with our performance on the pitch and off the pitch, our speed, physical, intelligence and agility, the other part is how we build a strong team.Yon cannot win except you all work as a team together. We are working very hard to see how we can know each other better. So if someone is running, someone else knows he has to support him, so what we have left is to develop our understanding.

"The strength of the team is that we come together and understand that we are here to represent our nation and our aim i to win for Nigeria, Akinluyi said."

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Friday Ekpo, has said that the invitation of Mikel Obi and other natobale Nigerian foreign based football players should be based on the players zeal and commitment to the national team.

The foermer Abila Babes player, said head coach of Eagles, Stephen Keshi, should ensure that the invitation of players to Eagles camp was not base on the strenght of clubs the players play for in Europe but such players must endeavor to show Nigerians soccer administrators and fans that they are ready to make the nation proud.

Brenford based high riding Nigerian born coach, Azeez Akinbolu, has hailed the current rebuilding process of the national team led by Head Coach Stephen Keshi.

Akinbolu, who is presently a youth and academy coach, was once involved with the Golden Eaglets and recently led the Nigerian team in the United Kingdom, alongside Coach David Doherty to win the UK African Cup of Nations, said he foresees the Super Eagles emulating his team by winning the next Cup of Nations scheduled for next year in South Africa.

Akinbolu spoke through his agents Utmost Sports Management, said he was currently involved with young and grassroots players because that has and will always be the basis of football growth in the world.

On his plans for the future, Akinbolu said being a Nigerian who is making waves in the United Kingdom, he would not fail to respond to any call by the Nigerian football authorities for him to serve fatherland.

No Rift With Mikel, Keshi Insists.

Super Eagles boss, Stephen Keshi has reacted swiftly to the call by former national team skipper, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, that Chelsea star, John Mikel Obi should be recalled to the national team.

“We may have played some games without Mikel but he has always been part of the team and I must tell Nigerians that I have been in touch with the player. On the day of the Nations Cup draws in South Africa, myself and Mikel spoke for over 40 minutes on various aspect of football and I was impressed with his patriotism for Nigeria and the success of the national team.

"We must be careful not to bring division and hero worship into the national team. Mikel has said again and again that he has no problems with the national team technical crew and I don’t have any problems with him either, so calling for his recall to the team is unnecessary, because he has always been a part of the team”, Keshi who spoke from Benin City said.

Keshi, who insisted that there was never a time the player was out of the national team scheme of things, said he might  have played some games without Mikel but he has always been part of the team and he must tell Nigerians that he have been in touch with the player.

The former captain of Eagles, explained that he spoke with Mikel Obi on the day of the Nations Cup draws in South Africa, for over 40 minutes on various aspect of football and he was impressed with Mikel's patriotism for Nigeria and the success of the national team.

The Eagles who warned that there is need to  be careful not to bring division and hero worship into the national team, said such calls would mean that the other European based professionals who were not invited for the June games against Namibia, Malawi and Rwanda were not important in the national team.

“We have a lot of players who were not part of the last games like Obafemi Martins, Obinna Nsofor, Ogbuke Obasi, Emmanuel Emenike and more. These players are as important and very good to our ambition of building a strong national team for Nigeria and I have been in touch with all of them, so we must avoid division in the national and respect the decision of the coach.

Keshi concluded by saying that no matter the amount of pressure, he would make it a point of duty to invite only the players needed for particular games and if Mikel is relevant he would surely be call

Lawal Lashes At Eaglets’ Critics.

Former Super Eagles’ midfielder, Garba Lawal has categorically stated that the budding Golden Eaglets need encouragement rather than criticism ahead of their qualifiers for African Under-17  Youth Championship to be hosted by Morocco in 2013.

Lawal,  Team’s Coordinator when the Golden Eaglets were runners up at the 2009 FIFA World Cup hosted by Nigeria but won by Switzerland, is miffed about the incessant discourse bothering  on allegation of  over aged players which  according to him, could affect the overall psyche of the team.

“Frankly, the new Golden Eaglets under Coach Garba Manu is on the right course,” explained the former Nigerian International who is a member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Committee. “We need to commend the excellent manner they have selected the players and I think it’s only the mischief makers that have not seen anything good in what they are doing.

“I think this is the team all Nigerians need to rally behind and offer constructive criticism if need be rather than destroy the good job being done by the coaching crew,” added Lawal.

He said  the new Golden Eaglets under Coach Garba Manu was on the right course and the team's technical crew need to be commended based on  the excellent manner they have selected the players.

“The Golden Eaglets should serve as the bedrock of other levels of the nationals teams consequently we need to support the genuine efforts of the NFF at ensuring that the right players are picked for this category,” noted Lawal, a scorer of that beautiful angular goal against legendary goalkeeper, Andoni Zubizarreta in Nigeria’s 3-2 defeat of Spain at the France’98 World Cup. “The Golden Eaglets are the future stars and we need to give them all the necessary support.”

Nigeria failed to qualify for the last two editions of the African Under-17 Championship hosted by Algeria and Rwanda in 2009 and 2011  but the team has been undergoing a rebuilding process since February when a screening  was conducted for about 3,000 players at the FIFA/NFF Goal Project Centre in Abuja.

The 40 successful players were later camped for one month in Calabar in May and are expected back in camp soon ahead of their First Round game against Niger in September.

The team have been drawn against neighbouring Niger in one of the First Round matches towards the 10th African Under 17 Championship with their  First Leg match scheduled for Niamey during  the weekend of  September 7-9 and the reverse fixture at home  on  the weekend of September 21-23.
